A Guide to Google Business Profiles (formerly Google My Business)

A Guide to Google Business Profiles

Why You Need a Google Business Profile

If you want more people to find your business online, setting up a Google Business Profile is one of the best steps you can take.

It helps your business show up on Google Search and Google Maps, and it gives you a place to collect Google reviews from happy clients. Those reviews in turn help build trust and can lead to more bookings.

In this post, I’ll explain why your profile matters, how to set it up, and how to use your Google review link to ask for testimonials.

Why Business Owners Use Google Business Profiles

I recently worked with a few clients that didn’t have a Google Business Profile yet, and I told them to set it up right away. Here’s why:

  • It makes your business easier to find on Google

  • You can collect reviews to build trust with future clients

  • Positive reviews help build your credibility and can boost sales

If you don’t have a Google Business Profile, follow the steps below and create your profile today.

What Is a Google Business Profile?

A Google Business Profile (previously called Google My Business) is a free tool that acts like a virtual storefront for your business.

When people search for the services you offer, your profile can help your business show up in Google Search and Google Maps. This makes it easier for potential clients to find you.

Your profile also builds trust. It shows Google-backed information, like your business name and reviews, which helps people see your business as real and reliable.

You can add helpful details to your profile, such as:

  • Your address or service area

  • Business hours

  • Services and products

  • Photos and banners

Whether your business is online or has a physical location, a Google Business Profile can help more people discover what you offer.

How to Set Up Your Google Business Profile

Follow these steps to create your Google Business Profile:

  1. Log in with your Google account (use your business email if you have one)

  2. Go to google.com/business and click to create a profile if you don’t have one.

  3. Add your business name

  4. Pick your primary business category (you can add more later - select up to 9 more categories)

  5. Say if you have a storefront location or not

  6. Add your service area (cities or postal codes. Add up to 20 service areas. Google recommends not to extend the boundary of your service area more than 2 hours from where your business is based)

  7. Enter your business website and phone number

  8. Verify your business by email or video (no more waiting for a postcard to arrive)

That’s it. Once you verify your profile, it’s live.

How to Improve Your Google Business Profile

According to Google, customers are 2.7 times more likely to consider a business to be credible if they find a complete Google Business Profile. So it’s important to set up your profile to include any information that is relevant to potential clients.

Here’s what to add:

  • Business hours (and keep them up to date). It’s really disappointing to find a business online, check their hours, go to the location and find that it’s closed.

  • Social Media links: you can include Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, TikTok, X and YouTube links.

  • Description: a short description of your business and what you offer.

  • Attributes: select from different attributes like: “online appointments” or “woman-owned”.

  • Products: include the product name, category, price, description, landing page URL and photo.

  • Services: include the description and price for all the services you offer.

  • Photos: add photos to make your profile more attractive for potential clients.

    • Types of photos: logo, cover photo, photos of your store, products and services.

    • Format: PNG or JPG

    • Size: Between 10 KB and 5 MB

    • Resolution: Recommended 720 px tall x 720 px wide. Minimum of 250 px x 250 px.

Google Reviews

One of the most powerful features of a Google Business Profile is the ability to gather client reviews. Positive reviews act as social proof and help potential clients feel more confident in your services.

Positive reviews can directly impact your bottom line. Many consumers rely on online reviews when making decisions. This is why businesses with higher ratings often see more sales and new clients.

How to Get Your Google Review Link

After you set up your Google Business Profile, get your Google review link so you can share it with past clients.

To find your Google Review link:

  2. Click ‘Ask for reviews’. For those using Google Maps - click ‘Customers Reviews Get more reviews’.

  4. Click the copy icon beside the URL and share it

Use this link in:
